Hyman Joseph Ettlinger was born September 1, 1889, in St. Louis, Missouri, and was educated at Washington University (1910) and Harvard University (1911, 1920). He joined the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin in 1913, retiring in 1968. He was well-known for his ability as a teacher.
